LAUREATE 40 UNDER 40

Robbert Jan van der Veen receives Laureate 40 under 40 European next new talented generation of designers.
A Laureate for one of Europe's 40 most promising designers 2020-2021. Robbert Jan is the only urban designer elected from the list of European architects, industrial designers and landscape architects.

A fine distinction that we as ECHO urban design are particularly proud of. The jury praised him for his talent to influence the near future with his direct impact on future areas and international cities. The Laureate was awarded by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design. The exhibition ’40 Young European Architects with new Visions’ will be open in December and January at the European Centre Athens, Mitropoleos 74, Athens.

‘For me, the city of the future is a place that people feel emotionally connected to. Are attracted to. Where the energy of the past comes back to life. Creating multiple worlds on top of each other. With connection as the common thread. Connecting people with places and vice versa. Green and sustainable. For a better and hopeful future’, says Robbert jan van der Veen.

Robbert Jan is the founder and chief designer of ECHO urban design and a lecturer in design at the Technische Universiteit Delft. Our clients and colleagues, and students and teachers describe him as the kind of person who dares to present a vision and project it. His work can be recognised by inspiration and emotion, bringing to life an existing place where man, nature and society are interconnected. Our clients recognise him by his signature. He transforms something complicated into a clear and insightful whole. With his hand sketching, Robbert Jan can bring an idea to life.

Influencing the future and inspiring people are themes that Robbert Jan works with daily. One of his current projects is the development of the new urban design guide. A practical and inspiring book about new urban design. This book provides insight into the critical success factors for developing a new area and helps colleagues systematically create the present, the future, next year and perhaps even the next century.

The jury selects the talents for their visionary thinking, which globally influences how we see a building or area. Robbert Jan was selected because of his uniqueness in concept, aesthetics, innovation and sustainability. A gifted mind that will shape the future, according to the jury.
