Yearbook of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design

“In my view, the challenge for the future is to find an answer to the question: how can we build on the inspiration and emotion that are already tangible in an existing place?” These were the words of Robbert Jan van der Veen, speaking at the launch of the 2021 Yearbook of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design in the Netherlands.
In collaboration with Orange Architects, MORE Architecture, Studio Nauta, MoederscheimMoonen Architects, ECHO Urban Design, Stebru and Leyten, ECHO Urban Design won the tender for the redevelopment of ZOHO, the Zomerhofkwartier in Rotterdam. The plan seamlessly integrates 600 new homes with the area’s existing identity.
The selection committee recognised the project’s strong social focus. It highlighted our attention to questions such as: how can we address the need for new housing without compromising public spaces and amenities, accommodate the transition to a more sustainable future in terms of climate and energy, and respect existing users and buildings? The committee described the proposal as a radical vision for a layered city.
“With a shared car park, a semi-public rooftop landscape, a public grandstand and a ‘living room’ for meetings, events and neighbourhood activities, ZOHO lays the foundations for a sense of community and neighbourhood identity,” the selection committee stated.
ECHO Urban Design does not claim to be able to shape society as a whole. However, through our designs, we can help people connect and interact more meaningfully within a small part of a neighbourhood. In doing so, we hope to offer a vision for society at large.
