WIN! ECHO Urban Design and RoosRos Architecten win tender for Machinewerf Vlissingen

ECHO Urban Design and RoosRos Architecten Goes, together with partners Leyten, Fullhouse B.V., DEPART and Steenvlinder, have been selected by the Municipality of Vlissingen as the winning team for the ambitious development of the Machinewerf, a prominent plot within the Scheldekwartier. ECHO is responsible for the urban design, landscape design and the architectural concept, with technical support from RoosRos Architecten. The selection took place through a municipal partner selection process focused on vision, spatial quality and collaboration.

The Machinewerf occupies a key position between the city and the harbour, next to the historic Machinefabriek, Timmerfabriek and the Dock, and represents one of the final links in the transformation of the Scheldekwartier. The winning proposal translates the municipality’s ambitions — heritage, quality of life and social sustainability — into a distinctive and coherent urban and architectural ensemble. Four robust residential buildings with varying heights and characteristic industrial roof forms create a clear composition along the quay and enclose a green, permeable inner courtyard.

The architecture refers to the industrial DNA of the former machine yard, with a contemporary interpretation of the factory grid. Brick, steel and glass define the material palette, while an active and elevated plinth creates a lively relationship with the quay. The transition between the homes and the green inner world has been carefully designed, allowing for a balance between privacy and social interaction and providing space for encounters. The inner courtyard consists largely of open ground with native planting and a variety of trees. Paths and gathering spaces incorporate industrial elements such as concrete slabs, pieces of old rails and local industrial relics. The new Machinewerf will become a distinctive green and industrial piece of city where meeting, social interaction and diverse forms of living take centre stage.
